At Friday evening services we will have a special musical service celebrating Shabbat Shirah, the traditional “Sabbath of Song”, combined with the honoring of Tu B’Shevat as our very own Avi Goldberg delivers a special environmentally conscious Midrash.

On Saturday, enjoy a special afternoon hike at Lands End, led by CSZ member Joss Eldredge.  If you wish to carpool, please meet at CSZ at 12:15.  Office person Greg Lawrence will be helping to coordinate carpool efforts; you may reach him by calling 415-861-6932 or by emailing greg@shaarzahav.org.  Otherwise, please meet at the Land’s End trailhead just above the Cliff House at 1 pm.  Finally, there will be a Saturday evening screening of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth at 7 pm.  Following the screening, a Q & A discussion session will be led by Dr. Irving Mintzer and Amber Leonard, whose outstanding bios can be viewed below.

Dr. Irving Mintzer

Dr. Irving Mintzer is an internationally recognized expert on energy technologies and climate change, along with their impacts on society. In the early 1980s, he recognized the importance of climate change and has written about them in the years since. He has consulted and advised on these issues for transnational corporations and multilateral financial institutions. He has provided testimony on the linkages among energy policies, air pollution, and economic development to committees of the US Congress as well as the British, Italian, German, and European Parliaments. He is currently working with the senior staff of the California Energy Commission to analyze the implications of alternative transportation policies designed to accelerate market penetration of advanced vehicle technologies and alternative fuels, and to understand their impact on the state’s electric power and natural gas industries.

 Amber Leonard

Amber Leonard has been involved in climate change work since the early 1990’s, working to bring together the perspectives of the environment, development, and business NGO communities. She has conceived and co-edited two volumes on climate change for Cambridge University Press. For seven years, she was managing editor of Global Change Magazine, which focused on new developments in science, economics, and policy research on global climate change and ozone depletion, and targeted a select audience of national policymakers, journalists, and senior business leaders. She was also project director of the innovative New Initiative for North-South Dialogue on Climate Change, organizing a series of international dialogues in developing countries that focused on identifying critical issues and bringing them into the UN climate negotiations. She is currently engaged in energy and climate initiatives in both California and Brazil.
